San Diego Dive Sites
San Diego provides several locations for both shore and boat diving. Shore diving locations include La Jolla Shores, La Jolla Canyon, La Jolla Cove, and Casa Cove. Boat diving provides opportunites for wreck diving at Wreck Alley. Wreck alley includes the Yukon, the Ruby E., the NOSC Tower, and the El Rey.
La Jolla Shores
La Jolla Shores is located along an open stretch of beach north of La Jolla Cove. There are rock outcroppings along the southern portion of this area. Leopard sharks congregate there during the summer months. You will see many sharks when entering the water. Visibility is generally poor in the shallows due to wave action, but can increase with depth.
La Jolla Cove
La Jolla Cove offers an abundance of sea life including kelp, large quantities of fish, sea lions and seals. There is a swim through and several caves you can enter to the northeast. Visibility is often only 10 to 15 feet, but can increase to 25 to 30 feet on many occasions.
Casa Cove offers a relatively easy beach entry due to a sea wall. The cove is located south of La Jolla Cove. Seals and sea lions are typically present there in large quantities throughout most of the year. The seals and sea lions are protected. You are not allowed to approach them. However, they are likely to approach you in the water.
La Jolla Canyon
La Jolla Canyon is a long surface swim off shore of about 1000 feet. Entry is from La Jolla Shores. The canyon drops off to depths of thousands of feet. Walls and ledges are abundant.
The Yukon was a Canadian destroyer that was purposely sunk as an artificial reef in the year 2000. It is considered one of the best artificial reefs on the west coast. The ship lies on it's side with the lower portion of the wreck lying at about 105 feet. There are large openings cut into the hull to allow for safer penetration. The wreck is 366 feet long.
Ruby E. Wreck
The Ruby E. was a 165-foot long Coast Guard cutter. The wreck sits upright but it has also experienced considerable deterioration since it's sinking in 1989. There are several penetration points, but the best is the wheel house.
